Ingredients
Scale
For the Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
For Assembly
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for spreading)
- Granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Make the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, active dry yeast, and salt. Add warm water, softened butter, and the egg. Knead the mixture until it forms a smooth, elastic dough, approximately 10 minutes. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Roll and Shape: After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release air. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Roll each portion into a large rectangular shape. Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface of the dough. Then, roll the dough tightly like a jelly roll. Slice the rolled dough into 1-inch wide pieces.
- Form the Cruffins: Take each sliced piece and gently flatten it slightly, then twist it into a spiral shape. Place each spiral into a greased muffin tin. Allow the shaped cruffins to rise for another 30 minutes to become puffy.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the cruffins in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top.
- Finish: Once baked, brush the hot cruffins generously with melted butter. Sprinkle granulated sugar over them, and then dust with powdered sugar for a beautiful and tasty finishing touch.
Notes
- Ensure the water used is warm, not hot, to activate yeast without killing it.
- Softened butter for spreading should be easily spreadable but not melted.
- Allow adequate rising time for fluffy and tender texture.
- Use a greased muffin tin or line it with parchment cups to prevent sticking.
- For extra flavor, consider adding vanilla extract or cinnamon to the dough or sugar toppings.
