Ingredients
Scale
Brownie Base
- 1 (18.3-oz) box brownie mix (plus ingredients required per box, usually eggs, oil, and water)
Topping
- 2 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- ½ cup chopped pecans
- Flaked sea salt (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350ºF. Line an 8×8-inch or 9×9-inch square cake pan with parchment paper and spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Make brownie base: Prepare the brownie mix according to the package directions, which typically includes mixing in eggs, oil, and water as specified.
- Partially bake brownies: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then, remove the pan from the oven.
- Prepare topping mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with light brown sugar, egg, vanilla extract, chocolate chips, and chopped pecans. Stir well until fully incorporated.
- Add topping to brownies: Gently spoon the chocolate chip and pecan mixture evenly over the top of the partially baked brownies.
- Finish baking: Return the pan to the oven and continue baking for an additional 18 to 20 minutes. The brownies are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with only moist crumbs attached.
- Cool and serve: Remove the brownies from the oven, sprinkle with flaked sea salt if desired, and let cool completely. Once cooled, cut into bars and serve.
Notes
- Use parchment paper for easy removal and clean edges.
- Flaked sea salt is optional but adds a nice balance to the sweetness.
- Ensure the topping mixture is spread gently to avoid mixing it with the brownie base.
- Check brownies closely near the end of baking to avoid overbaking and ensure they remain fudgy.
