Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Seasoning
- 1 lb boneless beef sirloin steak, cut into thin strips
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Main Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4 cups thinly sliced sweet onions (about 2 large onions)
- 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2/3 cup beef broth
- 2 medium red potatoes, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
- 8 oz Brussels sprouts, trimmed and quartered (about 3 cups)
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak: Cut the sirloin steak into thin strips and season them evenly with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor before cooking.
- Caramelize the Onions: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced sweet onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until they soften and begin to caramelize.
- Add Balsamic Vinegar and Sugar: Stir in the balsamic vinegar and sugar to the onions, continuing to cook for another 5 to 10 minutes until the onions are deeply caramelized and sweet.
- Sear the Steak: Push the caramelized onions to the side of the skillet. Add the seasoned steak strips to the cleared space and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, turning occasionally until the beef is nicely browned on all sides.
- Simmer with Vegetables: Pour in the beef broth, then add the thinly sliced red potatoes and quartered Brussels sprouts. Stir gently to combine, cover the skillet, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and cooked through.
- Melt the Cheese & Serve: Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the top of the skillet contents. Cover for 1 minute to allow the cheese to melt, then serve immediately for a warm, flavorful meal.
Notes
- Use thinly sliced onions and potatoes for quicker cooking and better texture integration in the skillet.
- If you prefer a deeper onion flavor, cook the onions a few minutes longer during caramelization.
- You can substitute beef broth with vegetable broth for a slightly lighter taste.
- Gruyère cheese provides a rich, nutty finish, but Swiss cheese can be used as a milder alternative.
- Ensure to slice the steak uniformly for even cooking and tenderness.
