Ingredients
Scale
Butter
- 1/4 cup butter
Batter
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1 cup sugar (divided: 2/3 cup + 1/3 cup)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Peach Filling
- 2 cups peeled peaches (if frozen, thaw and drain juice)
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Topping
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
Optional
- Ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cobbler.
- Melt Butter: Place 1/4 cup of butter in a 9-inch glass baking dish and put it in the preheated oven to melt while you prepare the batter.
- Prepare Batter: In a large bowl, mix together 1/2 cup flour, 2/3 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add 1/3 cup milk and 1 egg, stirring until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Pour Batter: Carefully pour the batter mixture over the melted butter in the baking dish. Important: Do not stir the batter after pouring.
- Mix Peaches: In a separate bowl, combine 2 cups peeled peaches, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, mixing gently to coat the peaches evenly.
- Add Peaches: Spoon the peach mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish. Again, do not stir the fruit into the batter.
- Top with Brown Sugar: Sprinkle 1/4 cup brown sugar evenly over the top of the peaches to add sweetness and create a caramelized topping.
- Bake Cobbler: Bake the cobbler in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes or until the top turns golden brown and the batter is fully cooked.
- Broil for Crispness: For an extra crispy and browned topping, place the cobbler under the broiler for a few minutes—watch closely to prevent burning.
- Serve: Serve the peach cobbler warm, optionally topped with a scoop of ice cream for a delightful contrast of temperature and texture.
Notes
- Use fresh peeled peaches for the best texture, but frozen peaches are a convenient alternative—just be sure to thaw and drain excess juice.
- Do not stir the batter after pouring it over the melted butter as this helps create a layered texture with the peaches.
- If you like a spicier topping, increase the cinnamon slightly or add a pinch of ground cloves.
- The broiling step is optional but recommended for a crunchy top crust.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated; the cobbler is also delicious served cold or warmed.
