Meatloaf Ingredients
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
Topping
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon mustard
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature by the time your meatloaf is ready to bake.
- Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, gently mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and dried thyme if using. Be careful not to overmix to keep the meatloaf tender.
- Shape the meatloaf: Transfer the mixture into a greased or parchment-lined loaf pan, shaping it into a compact loaf.
- Prepare the topping: In a small bowl, stir together ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard until smooth. Spread this mixture evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
- Bake: Place the loaf pan in the oven and bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C), ensuring it’s fully cooked.
- Rest and serve: Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes after baking to let juices redistribute, then slice and enjoy.
Notes
- Ground turkey or pork can be substituted for beef, or mix in sausage for enhanced flavor.
- Adding chopped bell peppers or shredded carrots into the mix boosts vegetable content and adds moisture.
- Leftover meatloaf slices are perfect for hearty sandwiches.
