Description
Enjoy a classic comfort food with this Delicious Patty Melts recipe, featuring juicy ground beef patties, caramelized sweet onions, melted Swiss or American cheese, and toasted rye or sourdough bread. Perfectly grilled in a skillet for a crispy, golden exterior and warm, savory filling.
Ingredients
Scale
Meat & Cheese
- 1 lb lean ground beef (80/20)
- 4 slices Swiss or American cheese
Vegetables & Bread
- 1 large sweet onion, sliced
- 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
Other Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Season and form patties: In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper evenly, then shape into four equal-sized patties.
- Caramelize onions: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the sliced sweet onions. Cook them for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized to develop their sweetness.
- Cook patties: Increase the skillet heat to medium-high and add the patties. Cook each side for 3-4 minutes, ensuring they are fully cooked through with a nice sear on the outside.
- Assemble sandwiches: On one slice of bread, place a cooked patty, then top with the caramelized onions and a slice of cheese. Cover with another slice of bread.
- Grill sandwiches: Butter both sides of each assembled sandwich generously. Place them back into the skillet over medium heat, grilling for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Serve: Remove the patties melts from the skillet, slice them in half for easier eating, and serve hot for the best flavor experience.
Notes
- Use rye bread for a traditional patty melt flavor, but sourdough is a great alternative.
- Caramelizing the onions slowly is key for adding sweetness and depth of flavor.
- Butter both sides of the sandwich to achieve a crispy, golden crust when grilling.
- For extra flavor, you can add a spread of mustard or a little mayonnaise inside the sandwich before assembling.
- Ensure patties are not too thick to cook evenly within the short cooking time.
