Description

This Classic American Cheeseburger Pie is a savory and comforting dish combining ground beef, onions, and layers of melted cheddar and American cheeses baked in a creamy custard base. Perfect for a hearty family meal, it blends the flavors of a cheeseburger into a delicious and easy-to-serve pie format.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste (optional)
  • 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup Bisquick mix (or all-purpose flour for a firmer texture)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 slices of American cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare pie plate: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a standard 9-inch pie plate thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook onions and ground beef: In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the chopped onions until translucent. Add the ground beef, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder, cooking until the beef is fully browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Assemble beef layer: Spread the cooked meat and onion mixture evenly in the bottom of the prepared pie plate.
  4. Layer cheddar cheese: Sprinkle the grated Cheddar cheese over the meat layer uniformly.
  5. Prepare custard mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the Bisquick mix (or flour), whole milk, and eggs until smooth and fully combined, creating a custard-like batter.
  6. Pour custard over filling: Slowly and evenly pour the custard mixture over the beef and cheese layers in the pie plate, ensuring it seeps between layers.
  7. Bake the pie: Place the pie plate in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  8. Add American cheese topping: Remove the pie from the oven and lay the four slices of American cheese on top. Return the pie to the oven for another 3–5 minutes until the American cheese melts completely.
  9. Cool and serve: Allow the cheeseburger pie to cool for about 5-10 minutes before slicing to ensure it sets properly. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute Bisquick mix with all-purpose flour to create a firmer custard texture.
  • Adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and garlic powder according to taste.
  • Letting the pie cool slightly helps it hold its shape when sliced.
  • For a lower-fat version, consider using lean ground beef and reduced-fat cheese options.
  • This pie pairs well with a simple side salad or steamed vegetables.
