Ingredients
Scale
Spinach Dip Filling
- 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Dough and Topping
- 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional: sesame seeds or grated Parmesan for topping
Instructions
- Preheat Oven – Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Prepare Filling – In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, grated Parmesan, shredded mozzarella, thawed and drained chopped spinach, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until smooth and evenly blended, then set aside.
- Roll Bottom Dough – Take one can of crescent roll dough and roll it out directly onto the prepared baking sheet. Pinch the seams tightly to form a single, solid sheet of dough, which will serve as the base layer.
- Spread Filling – Evenly spread the prepared spinach dip mixture over the dough base, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges to allow for sealing.
- Roll Top Dough – Roll out the second can of crescent roll dough to a similar size and place it carefully on top of the spinach filling. Press down gently around the edges and seams to seal the dough layers together, encasing the filling.
- Shape Christmas Tree – Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the layered dough into a large triangle, mimicking the shape of a Christmas tree. Save any extra dough scraps for decorations like a star or ornaments if desired.
- Create Branches – Along the sides of the triangle, cut horizontal strips about 1 inch wide, stopping about an inch from the center trunk area. Twist each strip away from the center to form branches that will puff and separate when baked.
- Egg Wash and Toppings – Brush the entire shaped dough generously with the beaten egg wash to give it a golden, shiny finish. Sprinkle with optional sesame seeds or extra grated Parmesan cheese to add texture and flavor.
- Bake – Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the breadsticks are puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve – Remove from the oven and allow the breadsticks to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before slicing and serving to enjoy the festive spinach dip breadstick tree.
Notes
- Ensure the spinach is well drained to avoid soggy breadsticks.
- You can decorate the tree with small pieces of dough shaped like stars or berries before baking.
- Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
- The egg wash is essential for a beautiful golden finish but can be omitted for a dairy-free option, though color will be less vibrant.
