Description

These Chile Relleno Wontons are a crispy, cheesy appetizer inspired by the classic Mexican dish. Filled with Monterey Jack cheese and spicy green chilies, they are deep-fried to golden perfection and served with a tangy jalapeño soy dipping sauce. Perfect for parties or a flavorful snack, these wontons combine spicy, savory, and crunchy elements in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Wontons

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 1 lb Monterey Jack cheese, cut into 1/2 to 1 1/2-inch strips
  • Green chilies and hot green chiles, cut into strips (amount to preference)
  • Oil, for frying (enough to deep fry, approx. 4 cups)

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 minced jalapeño
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wontons: Lay out the wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Place one strip of Monterey Jack cheese and one strip of green or hot chili on each wrapper, according to your spice preference.
  2. Seal the Wontons: Lightly moisten the edges of each wonton wrapper with water. Fold over the wrapper to enclose the filling completely and press firmly to seal the edges, ensuring there are no gaps to prevent cheese leakage during frying. Let the sealed wontons rest for a few minutes.
  3. Fry the Wontons: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry the wontons in batches for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  4. Make the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced jalapeño, honey, and sesame oil. Let the sauce sit for at least 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Serve: Serve the crispy wontons hot alongside the jalapeño soy dipping sauce. Optionally, you can also serve with queso, salsa, or ranch dressing for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Make sure to seal the wonton edges well to prevent cheese from leaking during frying.
  • You can adjust the level of heat by using mild green chilies or hot peppers as preferred.
  • The dipping sauce can be prepared ahead and refrigerated for up to two days.
  • Use a deep pan to ensure even frying and avoid overcrowding the oil to keep the wontons crispy.
  • For a twist, experiment with different cheese types such as mozzarella or pepper jack.
